| Julio C. Santana joins the WhiteWings after spending the last six seasons in the Texas Rangers farm system as both a hitter and a pitcher.
Signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Rangers in 2002, Santana spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons as a shortstop in the Dominican Summer league. After struggling defensively, he slid over to second base at Class A (Short Season) Spokane (Northwest League), where he improved dramatically with the glove, but struggled to hit. With a career .220 batting averaged, the Rangers decided to send Santana to the Rookie-level Arizona League to become a pitcher.
Santana pitched 15.2 innings in 2006, going 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA in 10 relief appearances. He allowed only seven hits, but walked 13 while striking out 16.
The right-hander's control improved in 2007, where he walked two in 16.2 innings for Arizona while striking out 11. The Rangers promoted Santana to Class A Clinton (Midwest League), where he threw 9.2 innings without allowing an earned run in six games, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out five.
Last season, Santana went 4-2 with a 5.97 ERA in 36 relief appearances, while finishing 14 games and picking up one save. In 60.1 innings, he allowed 78 hits and 17 walks while hitting 10 batters. He struck out 43. |
