| Stephen Ward was a professional athlete for two years. He traveled and competed throughout much of the world.
Ward, 24, is now taking a shot at pro baseball.
He previously played in the pro tennis circuit.
Ward recently signed a contract to play with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and is presently working out at Harlingen Field.
“I first saw him play some baseball in Florida and I was really impressed,” WhiteWings Field Manager Eddie Dennis said. “He is a very good athlete, who can field, can really hit the ball and he has a very strong throwing arm. He will make us a good outfielder.”
Ward, who is right-handed, is 6-2 and weighs in at 190 pounds.
The native New Yorker, said Dennis saw him playing baseball with Showcase Baseball at Cocoa Beach, Fla., and saw some potential there. “He sort of took me under his wing,” Ward said.
He played Showcase Baseball in March 2008 for three weeks and hit .750, Dennis said. Next, it was the College and Pro Combine at Scottsdale, Ariz., where he led his team in batting with a .357 average.
Ward returned to Florida and played in the Instructional League and hit .385. This was followed by a stint in the Golden League’s Winter League, which ended a couple months ago, where he hit .358, Dennis said. |
